Streetside Live! with Baoba

Enjoy the infectious sounds of South American rhythms and beats from Toronto’s Baobá.

Baobá is a trio formed by Toronto’s top female percussionists taking traditional beats to the next level. Empowered by the natural musicality that flows from South American bodies, Anita Graciano, Y Josephine and Mari Palhares, representing Colombia, Venezuela and Brazil respectively, demonstrate a great mix; Ideal balance of voice, melody, and instrumentation.

When the group started in 2015 the dynamic was clear. Each member would influence the others through the different drumming rhythms they had studied from various backgrounds, shaping what had been taught into new lessons.

Although this project might appear recent, Anita, Y, and Mari, planted this Baobá seed way back on the common ground of friendship and continuous arts making… The group mostly performs original songs, old school Latin covers, cumbia, salsa, funk, and Afro-Brazilian/Colombian/Venezuelan inspired rhythms.

Streetside Live! with The Bookends

The Bookends never set out to be a band, but sometimes beautiful things take you by surprise. After discovering a shared love of Celtic music in 2016, backyard summer jams turned into countless hours of exploring tunes on cold winter evenings. As the band delved into vast collections of rich music in the Celtic tradition, tune set after tune set came together and they discovered their own distinctive sound and interpretation of the melodies. With the addition of the band’s unique arrangements, The Bookends was formed.

The Bookends music has always been a family affair. As they play, explore, and rehearse, the music is always accompanied by the sounds of their children playing together in the background. The band’s name, “The Bookends” was chosen as it reflects the two families – practically mirror images of each other – coming together to enjoy the journey of music.

Earlier this year The Bookends released its first album Chapter One, a collection of favourite tunes from those countless hours of playing together. As they continue their exploration of Celtic and traditional music, they are excited to see what else they will discover and create along the way.

Streetside Live! with Rant

Featuring members of Rant Maggie Rant. This local group fuse Celtic, traditional, and world music into their own unique sound.

Rant Maggie Rant brings an arsenal of instruments, styles and substance to their shows with versatility and virtuosity. The Stratford, Ontario band’s personality shines through as a collective of unique and different artists in their own right, the sum of which create unforgettable moments on stage. For more than a decade this multi-award winning band has consistently roused audiences from coast to coast.

While Rant Maggie Rant sticks close to the musical roots of Ireland and Scotland, as well as the other 5 Celtic nations and Canada’s East Coast traditions, these melodies are usually supported by the band’s unique fusion of hand-drumming, dub/jazz bass, soaring vocals, harmonies and folk/blues/rock guitar.

Traditionalists love their approach as they perform time honoured tunes in a contemporary way with an energy that will make you want to dance and rediscover your roots. With the addition of some not-so-traditional instruments, the African djembe, the Middle Eastern doumbek and Peruvian cajon to compliment the percussive underpinnings driving the rhythm, guitar and bass approach from more contemporary and urban styles – folk, rock, jazz, dub and blues.  Traditional melodies, Latin and Mediterranean rhythms, heartfelt shanties, revved up tempos and unexpected time changes all collide in original and contemporary compositions, often blending together to deliver an intoxicating performance.

Floating Barge Music With: Dayna Manning & Laura Chambers - Stratford Summer Music

Juno nominated artist Dayna Manning exemplifies the very best that Canadian Folk music can be. Her cool clear voice along with her insightful songs represent a history of Canadian musical art that goes back to the early ’60s and sounds just as vital today. A modern renaissance artist, Dayna self-produced the last three of the seven records she has released, including her most recent album, “Morning Light” (2019) which features chamber-folk arrangments by Stratford Festival alumnus Ben Bolt-Martin for violin, cello, flute, and French horn. Her first book, “Many Moons: A Songwriter’s Memoir” was released by Blue Moon Publishers in 2019. Through cross Canada tales spanning almost three decades, “Many Moons” chronicles Dayna’s unique collaborations with the likes of Burton Cummings, Spirit of the West, Col. Chris Hadfield, inventor William Lishman, and even the RCAF Snowbirds demonstration team.

Appearing on the Naxos label and award-winning soundtracks, Laura Chambers is an in-demand performer, teacher, and studio musician. She is also a founding member of Charm of Finches, Canada’s only professional quintet.
Ms. Chambers has been featured as a concerto soloist, orchestral player, and chamber musician across North America. She is principal flute of the London Symphonia and an active member of the GTA freelance scene. Laura has had the pleasure of performing with many groups, including the Niagara Symphony, the National Ballet of Canada, the Kingston Symphony, and the Aradia Ensemble. Her playing can be heard on the 2018 JUNO-nominated and Billboard-topping soundtrack for the video game Cuphead and Dayna Manning’s recent release, Morning Light (2019).
Passionate about getting outside, Laura enjoys camping, hiking, and music-making in the wild. Most recently, she was involved in an epic performance of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring in the deserts of Nevada and the new opera No One’s Safe by Nicole Lizée in the mountains of Banff.
In addition to maintaining a busy performance schedule, Laura is pursuing her PhD at York University with a research focus on the recontextualization and sustainability of Western Art Music in today’s world.
